Stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) is a way of giving radiotherapy to precisely target certain cancers and has been available in the West Midlands for a number of years.

Liver SABR
Currently, patients can only access liver SABR from one provider, University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) NHS Foundation Trust.
During 2026-27, we are working to expand the liver SABR service provision, so that patients can access services closer to home, and to increase the overall capacity and resilience. We will initially look to roll out to University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust and to University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) NHS Trust.
Lung SABR
All of our trusts offer lung SABR, but activity levels are quite variable across the West Midlands.
During 2026-27, we hope to understand this variation further and look at opportunities for increasing access to lung SABR for patients across the region.
Prostate SABR
NHS England formally commissioned prostate SABR in July 2026. Our trusts are at different stages in terms of implementation prostate SABR: some already offer this, whilst others will be commencing service provision shortly..
